The Center is committed to the R&D of micro sensors, power semiconductor devices & large-capacity equipment, and the research related to system package solutions demonstration & energy consumption intelligentization. It gathers many experts and talents such as Chang Jiang Scholars, Outstanding Young Scholars and Tsinghua University professors, focuses on the key equipment field of new power system, carries out cutting-edge theory and technology research on core devices and equipment, puts forward package solutions for system applications, and promotes the highly efficient, low-carbon and flexible transformation of energy consumption.

Institute of Power Electronics and Motor Systems

The institute focuses on advanced power electronic technology for large-capacity power converter, electrical energy routing devices and other flexible power conversion equipment for new-type distribution grids, and wireless electrical energy transmission. It has made significant breakthroughs in the field of accelerating simulation technology on power electronics and development technology on electric energy router, has sucessfully developed the first domestic power electronics simulation software‘DSIM’and a series of electrical energy routing devices and flexible power conversion equipment ranging from 50kW to MW.

Comprehensive Simulation and Intelligent Operation & Maintenance Institute for Power Transmission & Distribution Equipment

The Institute is committed to the scientific research and industrial development for the innovative technologies enabling the smart transformation of transmission & distribution systems. The main research areas include: comprehensive simulation of all equipment scenarios of power transmission & distribution lines, advanced power transmission & distribution equipment and supporting technology, intelligent operation & maintenance, and protection of power transmission & distribution lines.

Energy Consumption Intelligentization Institute

The Institute focuses on the trend of intelligent transformation on energy consumption side under carbon peaking & carbon neutrality goals, studies the key technologies of highly efficient, low-carbon and flexible energy consumption transformation, carries out research on the characteristic modeling & simulation of key energy equipment such as heat pump and charging pile, the analysis of energy consumption behavior and the optimization operation strategy of key energy equipment, develops the management control terminal and regulation system of key energy equipment, plans the energy consumption structure transformation and development demonstration of carbon peaking & carbon neutrality for cities/parks, and promotes the green and high-quality economic & social development with the green energy transformation.

Relying on the superior scientific research strength of the Department of Electrical Engineering of Tsinghua University, the Institute forms a research team with high-level academic research ability, prospective technology innovation ability and practical industry development ability. It carries out theoretical research, technical tacking and engineering construction at the three levels of devices, equipment and systems, be committed to becoming the core concept disseminator, theory & technology leader, standard & application practitioner for DC power grid, solves the difficulty of new power system with new energy as the majority, and contributes to achieving the goal of carbon peaking & carbon neutrality goals.

The Institute focuses on the R&D of micro sensors and devices for energy Internet, be committed to providing reliable data resources for energy equipment manufacturers and network operators, provides overall solutions for system ubiquitous perception & breakdown positioning, equipment digital diagnosis and intelligent operation & maintenance, and gives comprehensive, effective, real-time and innovative information support for energy Internet, and realizes the deep integration, perception and regulation of energy flow, information flow and business flow of the energy Internet.

Photovoltaic Storage DC & Flexible Application Technology Institute

The Institute gathers innovative talents in system application, focuses on the two research fields of diversified & highly efficient utilization of new energy in industrial microgrids, and interaction between electric transportation and large-scale vehicle networks, be committed to realizing energy conservation & carbon reduction and high-quality industrial development in the two major scenarios of industry and transportation, provides planning consulting services, engineering technical services and system innovation solutions from strategic research to innovation demonstration, and contributes to the expansion of new businesses and the fostering of new industries for partners.

Large-capacity power semiconductor devices and key equipment technology of DC grid


  • Having developed a series of new generation of large-capacity power semiconductor device IGCT for DC grid, with large-capacity power level, lower loss, greater turn-off current and higher reliability. Its multiple performance indicators are internationally leading, and have greatly reduced costs and realize the localization development of core devices.

  • Breakthrough in large-capacity power conversion technologies based on IGCT-Plus device such as flexible DC converter valve based on MMC, DC transformer, integrated energy storage STATCOM , DC energy dissipation device, large-capacity converter, LCC to resist commutation failure, and hydrogen generation power supply technology

  • Having invented the coupling negative-voltage hybrid DC breaker and multi-terminal DC breaker, and developed the first series of high-medium-low voltage DC breaker products at home and abroad

The tool integrates a large number of data sets applied for green hydrogen applications such as key equipment, wind & solar resources, and typical scenario application framework. It provides the optimally economical configuration scheme for wind-solar-hydrogen-storage integrated project combining equipment characteristics and operation control strategies through the boundary configuration of the wind-solar-hydrogenstorage integrated project. Realize the optimal design for project configuration scheme, and accurately assess and improve the economy of actual operation of the project.

Planning and investment decision assistance system, with the orientation of load & emission reduction needs, in-depth analysis of energy supply & demand, accurate planning of new energy project under carbon peaking & carbon neutrality It can load national-municipal level of wind-solar resources and energy price data, provide more than 20 types of devices to build a low-carbon comprehensive energy system model, and achieve 8760 hours of integrated energy system capacity optimization & operation optimization coupled with hot & cold electric hydrogen, which saves at least 30% time compared with the traditional EXCEL based method

Advanced power transmission & distribution equipment and technology


  • Fully understand the shortcomings and deficiencies of the existing power transmission & distribution network equipment system, and accurately capture the new trends and new demands in the R&D field of power transmission & distribution equipment

  • Relying on the research experience of the Institute in the fields such as high voltage external insulation, line monitoring and ferromagnetic equipment (such as iron-core transformers, and reactors), it focuses on advanced & intelligent ferromagnetic equipment, new line sensing & measurement and auxiliary systems, and new line external insulation equipment, etc.


R&D product: continuous on-load voltage regulator of distribution network

It achieves transformers' continuous on-load voltage regulation through the magnetic field control and can be used to replace traditional mechanical tapping regulators. The technology fullfills the needs of frequent voltage regulation action due to the integration of renewable energy to the grid, effectively improves the voltage regulation reliability when a large number of renewable energy needs to be accommodated in the distribution network, and thus improves the integration of those resources.

R&D product: hard composite insulator

The technology adopts weather-resistant epoxy resin as the sheathing material for umbrella skirt and mandrel, resulting in excellent characteristics such as anti-UV aging and resistance to complex climate environment.  Such characteristics effectively prevent the mandrel from brittle breakage and other aging processes. The product features light-weight, excellent thermal shock resistance, anti-pollution flashover performance. The special umbrella-shape design for extreme weather such as ice flashover and rain flashover. It can also effectively reduces the degradation from animal biting and & wind & sand wearing.

R&D product: multistage magnetic coupling wireless energy picking system

Provide reliable power supply for sensors, data collectors and cameras installed on the tower with highly efficient wireless magnetic resonance coupling transmission. The integrated insulation packaging of the coil system of the system ensures the wireless power transmission capability and meets the requirements of insulation performance and mechanical strength.

Key technology of large-capacity power electronics and new power transmission


  • Propose the discrete state event-driven simulation technology, greatly reduce the computational redundancy, increase the simulation speed by two orders of magnitude on average under the same accuracy, solve the difficulty of nanosecond-level switching transient simulation divergence, and realize the localization of power electronics equipment simulation and development tools.

  • Having developed a high-frequency, large-capacity and multi-terminal electric energy routing equipment, with modularity, low loss and high reliability, which adopts large-capacity wide bandgap devices and driven active control technology, reduces the switching loss of semiconductor switching devices and greatly improves the power density and operation efficiency of the device.

  • Realize multi-terminal energy balance control and power routing technology to balance energy conflicts at different time scales, reduce energy fluctuations, decrease the volume and weight of energy storage devices, and improve the overall power density of the converter.


R&D product: megawatt-level medium voltage electric energy router

With characteristics such as multi-port, multi-cascading, multi-flow and multi-form, it functions as key supportive equipment for the wide access of distributed renewable energy, the flexible interconnection between the  substations/feeders in the distribution network, and the flexible conversion of various operation scenarios, and provides flexible solutions of electric energy management for diversified end-users with high efficiency performance.
